Overview
In March 1992, the Government Medical College Kota (GMC Kota) opened its doors to help satisfy the demand for doctors in the Kota division of Rajasthan after all except one division had one as of that point in time. Before that date, all of the other divisions in Rajasthan had at least one medical college, but not the Kota Division. On February 10, 1992, the State Government authorised the construction of a new medical college, and Dr R. L. Ajmera was appointed as principal of the new college. The first classes began in ESI Hospital, located on Jhalawar Road, with 50 students enrolled in the MBBS program.
In 1997, the college moved to its own permanent campus, and in 2001, it became affiliated with Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS). The college has been fully accredited by the National Medical Commission (NMC), previously known as the Medical Council of India (MCI), since December 1998; it is also accredited with an 'A' rating from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
GMC Kota has been a leading institution in the fields of General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, and Radiology, and has graduated over 3000 physicians who work in health care facilities throughout the country and around the world.
The college has developed significantly over the past years and established twelve different postgraduate degree programs; in addition, research is a focal point of the college, as is the college's involvement in many nationally recognised medical initiatives such as the Pulse Polio Program, the Tuberculosis Elimination Program, and the COVID-19 response. GMC Kota is unique among all of the medical colleges in all of Northern India in that it successfully combines academic training with hands-on experience through its associated hospital, which has 750 beds.
