Introduction
Before the college shortlist, a quick reality check: Mizoram doesn't have one. Not a padded-out list, not a hidden gem you missed — genuinely zero private medical colleges anywhere in the state. What it does have is a single government college with one of the more generous NRI allocations we've come across in this series. That's the real story here.
Quick Numbers Before We Dive In:
- 0 private medical colleges in Mizoram
- 1 medical college in the entire state — government-run
- 100 total MBBS seats a year
- 15% reserved for NRI candidates — a notably higher share than most government-college NRI quotas nationally
One College, No Asterisk
Zoram Medical College (ZMC), Falkawn — about 16 km outside Aizawl — is Mizoram's only medical college, full stop. Inaugurated in 2018 as the Mizoram Institute of Medical Education & Research, it's a fully government-run institution under the state's Health & Family Welfare Department, affiliated with Mizoram University and NMC-approved. There has never been a private medical college in Mizoram's history, and none is currently in the pipeline that we could find.
Inside Zoram Medical College
Set on an 84-acre hillside campus and attached to the 250-bed State Referral Hospital, ZMC handles around 1,000 outpatients a day and runs 24/7 emergency and trauma services — solid infrastructure for a college that's still barely seven years old.
| MBBS seats | 100/year |
| Founded | 2018 |
| Ownership | Government of Mizoram |
| Teaching hospital | State Referral Hospital, Falkawn — 250 beds |
| State quota fee | ≈ ₹30,000–40,000/year |
| NRI quota | 15 seats/year (15% of total intake) |
| Counselling | State Quota & NRI via Mizoram's Technical Wing (H&TE Dept.); AIQ via MCC |

Based on ZMC's published seat allocation: 70% state quota, 15% All India Quota, 15% NRI quota.
A Quota That Actually Means Something
Here's where Mizoram genuinely stands apart from the other small government-college states we've covered in this series. Goa's NRI allocation works out to roughly 1% of total seats — practically symbolic. Arunachal Pradesh's TRIHMS has no confirmed NRI category at all in its current seat matrix. Mizoram, by contrast, dedicates a full 15% of its intake to NRI candidates — the same proportion typically seen in private colleges nationally, just applied inside a government institution.

Goa and Mizoram figures are based on each state's published seat matrix. TRIHMS figure reflects the ambiguity documented in our companion Arunachal Pradesh guide. Rajasthan/Haryana are shown as a typical reference point among India's other government-college NRI-quota states.
For an NRI family, that difference is the whole ballgame. A 1% quota is a lottery ticket; a 15% quota is a genuine, plannable pathway.
The Price Tag Nobody's Publishing
Here's the honest gap in the research: while ZMC's state-quota fee is well documented (a remarkably low ₹30,000–40,000 a year), a specific, confirmed NRI-quota fee figure for ZMC wasn't available in current public sources at the time of writing. Based on the pattern seen at comparable government colleges with a Supreme Court-mandated NRI allocation — Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and similar states — a reasonable estimate lands somewhere in the ₹20–25 lakh-a-year range, but this is an informed estimate, not a confirmed ZMC figure. Contact the Technical Wing of Mizoram's Higher & Technical Education Department directly for the exact, current number before budgeting around it.
Falkawn Versus The Field
It's worth seeing ZMC's pricing next to its two nearest private-college neighbours in this series — Manipur and Meghalaya — even with the NRI figure above flagged as an estimate.

ZMC figures are as described above. Manipur and Meghalaya figures are the total NRI-quota course costs from our companion guides on those states, converted from their reported USD lump-sum fees.
Even at the higher end of our estimate, a ZMC NRI seat would cost a small fraction of what either neighbouring state's lone private college charges. If the estimate holds, this may be one of the better-value genuine NRI pathways in the entire Northeast — assuming, of course, that NEET rank and seat availability line up.
Getting In: The Paperwork Marathon
- Clear NEET-UG. No exceptions, no shortcuts, for any category, including NRI.
- Nail down your NRI, OCI, or PIO status, or line up a qualifying sponsor with the right documentation.
- Register with the Technical Wing, Higher & Technical Education Department, Government of Mizoram — this office, not ZMC directly, handles all State Quota and NRI seat allotment. The college's own admissions page is explicit: do not contact ZMC directly about seat allotment.
- Watch the notification window closely. Mizoram's NRI application cycle has run on tight timelines in past years — a roughly three-week submission window in 2026, for instance — so missing the dates means missing the year.
- Submit the readymade application form, obtainable in person from the Technical Wing office in Aizawl for a nominal fee, along with your supporting documents.
- Pay the admission fee and complete verification once seats are allotted through the joint MCC/state process.
- Report to ZMC in Falkawn with all original documents to finish enrolment.
What To Pack In Your Folder?
- Valid passport and visa/residency proof for the candidate or sponsoring NRI relative
- NRI/OCI/PIO status certificate, or sponsorship documentation if applying through a relative
- NEET-UG admit card and scorecard
- 10th and 12th mark sheets, with equivalence certification if schooled abroad
- Transfer certificate, migration certificate, and conduct certificate from the previous institution
- Any additional forms specified by the Technical Wing's own application package
Weighing The Decision
A few things worth sitting with before you commit to chasing a ZMC NRI seat:
- The 15% allocation is genuinely rare among government colleges — most states with any NRI provision at all offer a token handful of seats, not a proportional share. That alone makes Mizoram worth a serious look if your NEET score is competitive.
- The fee uncertainty is real, though, and it's not a small gap to plan around — the difference between ₹15 lakh and ₹25 lakh a year adds up fast across a full course. Get a written, current figure before you build a budget.
- Falkawn is remote, even by Northeast standards — Lengpui Airport is roughly 40 km away, and this isn't a campus with the kind of international-student infrastructure a college in Hyderabad or Kochi might offer.
- There's no backup within the state. If NEET rank or vacancy doesn't work out at ZMC, there's no second Mizoram college to fall back on — your next option is immediately out of state.
FAQs
Does Mizoram Have Any Private Medical Colleges?
No. Zoram Medical College, Falkawn, is the only medical college in the state, and it is entirely government-run. There has never been a private medical college in Mizoram.
How Many NRI Seats Does Zoram Medical College Offer?
15 seats a year, out of a total annual intake of 100 — 15% of the total, alongside 70 state-quota seats and 15 All India Quota seats.
Who Handles NRI-Quota Counselling For Mizoram?
The Technical Wing, Higher & Technical Education Department, Government of Mizoram, manages both State Quota and NRI-quota seat allotment. ZMC's own admissions material is explicit that the college itself does not handle allotment queries.
Why Does Mizoram's Government College Have Such A Large NRI Share?
It's not entirely clear from public sources, but Mizoram appears to have adopted a fuller 15% NRI allocation — the same proportion typically reserved in private colleges nationally — rather than the token handful of seats seen in states like Goa. This may reflect the state's limited overall medical education capacity and a deliberate policy choice to open a meaningful pathway for NRI applicants.
How Big Is Zoram Medical College's Teaching Hospital?
Its attached hospital, the State Referral Hospital in Falkawn, has around 250 beds and handles roughly 1,000 outpatients a day with 24/7 emergency and trauma services — solid for a relatively new institution, though smaller than the large multi-specialty hospitals attached to colleges elsewhere in this series.
How Remote Is Falkawn, Practically Speaking?
Fairly remote by international-student standards — the nearest airport, Lengpui, is around 40 km away, and Falkawn itself is roughly 16 km outside Aizawl. It's a manageable location for a family with genuine ties to the region, but worth factoring into travel planning either way.
Final Thoughts
Mizoram flips the usual script in this series. It's not a state with too many colleges to choose from, or a single overpriced private option — it's a single, inexpensive government college that happens to offer one of the more meaningful NRI quotas we've found in a small state. The catch is that the exact NRI price tag isn't well documented, so the homework here isn't comparing colleges — it's getting Mizoram's Technical Wing on the phone and getting a real number before you plan around it.
