Overview
The NEET UG exam is the only entrance test in India that students must take if they want to get into MBBS, BDS, or other medical courses like BAMS, BHMS, BNYS, or Veterinary Science. This exam is held once a year and is managed by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Whether you're aiming for a government medical college, a private MBBS college, or even looking to study MBBS abroad, NEET is a must.
NEET UG is an offline exam, which means students have to go to an exam centre and fill in answers on paper using a pen. It includes questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, based on what students learn in Class 11 and 12 NCERT books. The paper is multiple-choice and tests your basic understanding of science subjects. The total marks are 720, and there is negative marking for wrong answers.
Each year, more and more students are registering for NEET UG. In 2025, more than 20 lakh students gave the exam, and in 2026, the number is expected to increase even more. But the number of available seats for MBBS admission in India is limited, especially in government colleges. That’s why the competition is very high. Students who score above 600–650 marks usually stand a better chance of getting into a government college.
The NEET UG 2026 exam will open doors to over 1 lakh MBBS seats across India. These seats are available in government colleges, private colleges, and deemed universities. Admission to top institutes like AIIMS and JIPMER also happens through NEET now. Earlier, they had their own entrance exams, but now NEET is the only path.
If you want to study MBBS abroad in countries like Russia, Georgia, the Philippines, or Kazakhstan, you still need to clear NEET. Without it, Indian students won’t get approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to practice in India after coming back. So even if you plan to go abroad for MBBS, NEET is compulsory.
NEET UG is known to be tough, not because the syllabus is difficult, but because too many students are competing for too few seats. Everyone is studying from the same NCERT books, so what matters most is how well you understand the topics and apply them in the exam. A few marks can make a big difference in your rank and the college you get.
To sum it up, NEET UG is the first and most important step if you want to become a doctor. Whether you’re aiming for a top MBBS college in India, looking at options abroad, or exploring BDS or AYUSH courses, you cannot skip NEET. It’s not just an exam — it’s the foundation of your medical career. The sooner you start preparing the right way, the better your chances will be.
