    Introduction

    Overview of NEET UG exam

The NEET UG exam is the only entrance test in India that students must take if they want to get into MBBS, BDS, or other medical courses like BAMS, BHMS, BNYS, or Veterinary Science. This exam is held once a year and is managed by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Whether you're aiming for a government medical college, a private MBBS college, or even looking to study MBBS abroad, NEET is a must.

NEET UG is an offline exam – which means students have to go to an exam centre and fill answers on a paper using a pen. It includes questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, based on what students learn in Class 11 and 12 NCERT books. The paper is multiple-choice and tests your basic understanding of science subjects. The total marks are 720, and there is negative marking for wrong answers.

Each year, more and more students are registering for NEET UG. In 2024, more than 20 lakh students gave the exam, and in 2025 the number is expected to increase even more. But the number of available seats for MBBS admission in India is limited, especially in government colleges. That’s why the competition is very high. Students who score above 600–650 marks usually stand a better chance of getting into a government college.

The NEET UG 2025 exam will open doors to over 1 lakh MBBS seats across India. These seats are available in government colleges, private colleges, and deemed universities. Admission to top institutes like AIIMS and JIPMER also happens through NEET now. Earlier, they had their own entrance exams, but now NEET is the only path.

If you want to study MBBS abroad in countries like Russia, Georgia, Philippines, or Kazakhstan, you still need to clear NEET. Without it, Indian students won’t get approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to do medical practice in India after coming back. So even if you plan to go abroad for MBBS, NEET is compulsory.

NEET UG is known to be tough, not because the syllabus is difficult, but because too many students are competing for too few seats. Everyone is studying from the same NCERT books, so what matters most is how well you understand the topics and apply them in the exam. A few marks can make a big difference in your rank and the college you get.

To sum it up, NEET UG is the first and most important step if you want to become a doctor. Whether you’re aiming for a top MBBS college in India, looking at options abroad, or exploring BDS or AYUSH courses, you cannot skip NEET. It’s not just an exam — it’s the foundation of your medical career. The sooner you start preparing the right way, the better your chances will be.

NEET UG 2025 to be held on May 4, 2025. Compared to previous years, the competition is expected to be more intense.

    Key trends to know:

    • Around 24 to 25 lakh students are expected to appear for NEET UG 2025.
    • More government MBBS seats may be added with the introduction of new medical colleges.
    • Private MBBS college fees continue to range between ₹10 Lakhs to ₹25 Lakhs per year.
    • No major changes are expected in the syllabus, but NCERT Class 11 and 12 books remain the most important.

    • Admit Card: Carry your NEET admit card and a valid photo ID (Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, etc.).
    • Follow Dress Code: Adhere to the prescribed dress code (explained below).
    • Items to Carry: Only carry the required items, including your admit card, ID proof, and ballpoint pen.
    • Be Calm and Confident: Stay calm, focus on the questions, and manage your time effectively during the exam.
    • Follow Instructions: Listen carefully to the instructions given by the exam invigilators.

    Don’ts:

    • Do Not Carry Prohibited Items: Items like mobile phones, calculators, electronic gadgets, or any study materials are not allowed.
    • Avoid Wearing Jewelry: Do not wear jewelry or metallic items as they can raise security concerns.
    • Don’t Panic: If you don’t know an answer, don’t waste too much time on it. Move to the next question.
    • Avoid Unnecessary Communication: Do not talk to other candidates during the exam, as it may lead to disqualification.

    3. How to Fill the OMR Sheet Properly

Correctly filling the OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) sheet is crucial for your marks to be recorded accurately.

    • Use a Black or Blue Ballpoint Pen: Only a ballpoint pen is allowed to mark answers on the OMR sheet. Do not use any pencil or ink pen.
    • Mark the Circle Clearly: For each question, there will be a circle next to the options. Fill the circle completely with the ballpoint pen, making sure it is dark and clear. A light or incomplete mark may not be recognized by the scanner.
    • One Answer per Question: Mark only one answer for each question. If you choose more than one answer, it will be considered wrong.
    • Do Not Overwrite or Erase: If you make a mistake, do not cross out the answer or erase it. If you mark the wrong answer, leave it and move to the next question.
    • Keep the Sheet Neat: The OMR sheet is scanned, so avoid any scribbling or unnecessary marks on the sheet. Only mark answers in the provided circles.
    • Check Your Roll Number: Ensure your roll number is correctly filled in the provided space.

    4. Dress Code and Allowed Items in the Exam Hall

    • Dress Code:
      • No Metallic Objects: Avoid wearing clothes with metallic buttons or accessories like watches, chains, earrings, etc.

    • Break the Syllabus into Segments:
      • Divide the syllabus into manageable chunks. Create categories for each subject and allocate time for each topic.
      • Prioritize topics based on your strengths and weaknesses. Start with more difficult subjects or chapters.

      • Set achievable weekly goals for each subject. Focus on completing topics thoroughly rather than rushing to cover the entire syllabus at once.
    • Consistency is Key:
      • Stick to a consistent study routine. Ensure regular study hours, balanced with enough breaks to maintain focus.

    • For Chemistry, prioritize NCERT Inorganic and Organic chapters with emphasis on reaction mechanisms and concept clarity.

    2. Focus on PYQs & High-Yield Topics

    • Solve Previous Year Questions (PYQs) from the last 10 years to understand NEET's question style.

     4. Prioritize Rest and Mental Well-being

    • Sleep 7–8 hours daily—no compromise.
    • Avoid exam stress; take short breaks, listen to calm music, or do light exercise.
    • Avoid discussing preparation with others in a way that creates self-doubt.
