Introduction
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has released the Round 3 schedule for online counselling under NEET UG 2026. This is the last of the three main MCC rounds this season, and it comes with one especially important change from Round 1 and Round 2 that every candidate needs to understand — physical reporting is no longer optional for everyone this time.
Let's go through the full schedule, and then the rule that matters most.
The Schedule, Laid Out Simply
| Stage | Dates | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Verification of Tentative Seat Matrix by Institutes | 21 September 2026 | 1 Day |
| Registration/Payment | 22 to 27 September 2026 | 6 Days |
| Choice Filling/Locking | 23 to 29 September 2026 | 6 Days |
| Processing of Seat Allotment | 28 to 29 September 2026 | 2 Days |
| Result | 30 September 2026 | 1 Day |
| Reporting | 1 to 9 October 2026 | 9 Days |
| Verification of Joined Candidates Data by Institutes / Sharing of Data by MCC | 10 October 2026 | 1 Day |
Notice how registration, choice filling, and choice locking all overlap heavily around 27-28 September. This is the busiest stretch in the entire schedule, so let's break each stage down carefully.
Step 1: Verification Of Tentative Seat Matrix
Before anything opens for candidates, participating institutes spend this day verifying the tentative seat matrix for Round 3. As with earlier rounds, this doesn't require any action from you, but it's what determines the seat matrix you'll actually see once choice filling opens.
Step 2: Registration And Payment
This window has two separate cut-off times:
- Registration closes at 3:00 PM on 27 September 2026
- Payment stays open until 6:00 PM on 27 September 2026
As with every earlier round, that three-hour gap exists mainly as a buffer for payment gateway delays, not as extra planning time. Register and pay well before 27 September evening; don't treat 6:00 PM as your real deadline.
Step 3: Choice Filling And Locking
This window overlaps with registration and has its own layered timings:
- Choice filling is available from 23 September until 12:00 Noon on 28 September 2026
- Choice locking starts earlier — from 7:00 PM on 27 September, and stays open until 12:00 Noon on 28 September 2026
So you can keep adjusting your choices right up until noon on 28 September, but locking opens the evening before, from 7:00 PM on 27 September. Once you're within that locking window, review your list one final time and lock it deliberately, rather than relying on auto-lock to capture whatever you last saved.
Since this is your last chance at MCC-level choice filling this season, build as wide and thoughtful a list as you can; don't hold back to just a handful of top picks, since a college you don't add simply isn't available to you in this round.
Step 4: Processing Of Seat Allotment
Once choice locking closes at 12:00 Noon on 28 September, MCC spends the next day and a half processing seat allotment based on merit and locked choices. There's nothing to do here except wait.
Step 5: Result
The Round 3 result is declared on 30 September 2026, telling you whether a seat has been allotted to you, and if so, which college and course.
Step 6: Reporting
This is where Round 3 works differently from the two rounds before it, so read this part carefully.
Physical reporting is mandatory this time, for everyone. Unlike Round 1 and Round 2, where the Freeze/Float system let candidates hoping for a further upgrade skip physical visits and complete document verification online, Round 3 doesn't offer that option. This applies to:
- All candidates allotted a seat in Round 3, regardless of whether they're happy with it or hoping to try further rounds
- Float candidates from Round 1 or Round 2 who did NOT get an upgrade in those rounds
In other words, if you chose Float earlier this season specifically to avoid travelling to your allotted college while still hoping for something better, that option runs out here. Once Round 3's result is declared, you need to physically report with your original documents, complete verification in person, and finalize your admission, the same way Freeze candidates did in earlier rounds.
You get a genuinely generous nine-day window for this, 1 to 9 October, which is longer than the reporting windows given in Round 1 and Round 2. Use this time to travel and organize your documents properly, rather than rushing at the last moment, even though the window itself is longer.
Step 7: Verification Of Joined Candidates Data
This final stage is handled by the institutes and MCC together, verifying and sharing data on candidates who've actually joined, closing out this round of the process. No action needed from you here.
Why The Mandatory Reporting Rule Matters So Much This Round?
If you've been on Float through Round 1 and Round 2, hoping to keep upgrading without needing to travel, Round 3 is where that strategy reaches its natural end. This isn't a loophole or an oversight; MCC's own instructions for this year's Freeze/Float system were explicit about this from the start: Float was only ever meant to carry you through as long as you kept trying to upgrade, not indefinitely.
So if you're coming into Round 3 as a Float candidate who didn't upgrade in Round 2, start preparing for physical reporting now, rather than assuming another online-only option might still be available.
Documents You'll Want Ready
- NEET UG 2026 admit card and scorecard
- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates
- Category certificate, if applicable
- A valid government photo ID
- Recent passport-size photographs
- Any category-specific documents relevant to your admission
Since physical reporting applies to everyone this round, make sure you have originals, not just scanned copies, ready well before 1 October.
Why You Shouldn't Wait Till The Last Moment?
Registration, choice filling, and choice locking are all clustered tightly around 27-28 September, with multiple overlapping deadlines on those two days specifically. Portal traffic and payment gateways tend to slow down exactly when everyone rushes in during the final hours, so registering and locking your choices early gives you real protection against last-minute technical issues, especially since this is your final chance at MCC-level allotment this season.
FAQs
Is the payment deadline the same as the registration deadline?
No. Registration closes at 3:00 PM on 27 September, but payment stays open until 6:00 PM the same day. Pay as soon as you register, don't wait for that extra window.
Can I still be a Float candidate in Round 3 to avoid physical reporting?
No. Unlike Round 1 and Round 2, physical reporting is mandatory in Round 3 for all allotted candidates, as well as for Float candidates from earlier rounds who didn't get an upgrade. There's no online-only option this time.
What happens if I don't manually lock my choices?
The system will typically auto-lock whatever was last saved. Don't rely on this, go through your list and lock it deliberately before the 28 September, 12:00 Noon deadline.
How long do I have to report after the Round 3 result?
Nine days, from 1 to 9 October 2026. This is longer than the reporting windows in Round 1 and Round 2, but it's your last MCC round this season, so don't delay unnecessarily.
I was on Float in Round 2 and didn't get an upgrade, what happens now?
You'll need to physically report during the Round 3 reporting window (1 to 9 October), with all original documents, to complete your admission formalities, even if you don't get further movement in Round 3 itself.
Is this the last round MCC conducts this season?
Round 3 is generally the last of MCC's main numbered rounds, though a Stray Vacancy Round may follow separately depending on seat availability, keep checking MCC's official announcements for further updates.
Conclusion
Round 3 packs registration, choice filling, and locking into a tight window around 27-28 September, and it removes the Float flexibility that carried many candidates through the first two rounds without needing to travel. If you're allotted a seat here, or you're a Float candidate from an earlier round without an upgrade, physical reporting between 1 and 9 October is compulsory; plan your travel and documents accordingly.
Register and lock your choices early, build as wide a preference list as you can since this is your final MCC-level opportunity this season, and have your original documents ready well before October begins.
If you need help thinking through your Round 3 choice list, understanding what mandatory reporting means for your specific situation, or want guidance on what comes after this round, reaching out to a trusted NEET counselling expert can make this process considerably less stressful.
