    Introduction

The Stray Vacancy Round is the "cleanup" round. It is designed to fill the last few seats that remain vacant across India's medical colleges after Rounds 1, 2, and 3. These vacancies appear due to last-minute resignations, candidates not reporting to the allotted colleges, or administrative reasons.

The fourth step in the Stray Vacancy Round is about the process of seat allotment, and in this round, it will commence on Jan 19th-Jan 20th, 2026. Read on for a detailed look at this stage.

    Eligibility

You are eligible for seat allotment in the Stray Vacancy Round based on your original Round 1 choices if you meet the following criteria:

    1. You have successfully completed the Round 4 registration and payment.
    2. You fall into one of these categories:
      • Not allotted a seat in any previous round.
      • You resigned from a seat in a previous round.
      • You did not join a college you were allotted in a previous round.

    Who is NOT Eligible?

    • Candidates who have already joined and are studying in a college allotted in any of the previous rounds.
    • Candidates who freshly register for counselling; only Round 1 registrants are considered.
    • Candidates who withdrew from the counselling process entirely in a previous round.

    The Seat Allotment Process

The allotment for the Stray Vacancy Round is an automated system that uses your existing data. Here's how it works:

    StepProcess NameWhat Happens
1Eligibility FilterThe system checks who has completed the fresh Round 4 registration and payment. If you skipped this, you are out.
2Data IntegrationThe algorithm pulls two lists: the vacant seat matrix and every eligible candidate's locked choices from Round 1.
3Merit-Based MatchingStarting with the highest rank, the system scans each candidate's original Round 1 choice list and gives them the highest-preferred seat that is still vacant.
4Instant Seat FreezingAs soon as a seat is allotted, it is marked as "filled." The system then moves to the next candidate.

    Simple Example:
If your Round 1 choices were: 1. AIIMS Delhi, 2. CMC Vellore, 3. GMC Nagpur, and only GMC Nagpur is vacant, you will be allotted GMC Nagpur (provided your rank is high enough).

    Round 4 Benefits

This last round has unique strategic benefits.

    BenefitWhy It Helps You
Less CompetitionMany top-rankers have already taken seats and left the process, improving chances for mid-tier ranks.
Realistic PredictionsYou can check the vacant seats against your old choices to accurately gauge your chances of getting a seat.
Unexpected OpportunitiesA great seat can open up due to a last-minute resignation, giving you a lucky break you wouldn't get otherwise.
Final ClosureIt provides a definite end to the counselling journey, ensuring you don't miss the very last available seat.

    Result Announcement

The result for the Stray Vacancy Round is typically announced on a pre-specified date on the official MCC website. The process is straightforward:

    • The results are published as a PDF or are accessible by logging into your MCC candidate portal.
    • You will see one of two statuses: "Allotted" (along with the institute and course details) or "Not Allotted."
    • This is the most critical phase. If allotted a seat, you will have a very short window (usually 1-2 days) to accept the seat online and physically report to the allotted college. There is no "Float" option in Round 4. You must either "Freeze" (accept) or "Resign" (reject). Failure to take action within the deadline will result in the forfeiture of your seat and security fee.

    FAQs

I was allotted a seat in Round 2 but did not join. Will I get a better seat in Round 4?

You are eligible, but there is no guarantee of a "better" seat. The system will allot you the highest available seat from your Round 1 choice list. If a seat better than your Round 2 allotment is vacant and on your list, you may get it. However, your initial security fee will be forfeited.

Is the 'Float' option available in Round 4?

No. The "Float" option is typically not available in the Stray Vacancy Round. You must make a final decision: either "Freeze" (accept the seat, ending your counselling) or "Resign" (reject it, forfeiting your fee).

What if none of the vacant seats match my Round 1 choices?

If the available seats in the Stray Vacancy Matrix do not match any of the colleges on your original Round 1 choice list, you will not be allotted any seat in this round. The system only considers your pre-existing preferences.

Can I reject a seat after accepting ('Freezing') it in Round 4?

Technically, yes, but it has severe consequences. Rejecting a seat after freezing it will lead to the forfeiture of your security fee and you will be blocked from participating in any further counselling rounds for the entire academic year.

How long do I have to report to the college after Round 4 allotment?

The timeline is extremely short. You typically have only 1-2 days after the result declaration to both accept the seat online and physically report to the allotted institute with all original documents and fees.
