Introduction
Welcome back to another blog where we decode the various steps involved in the online counselling process for NEET PG!
So we've made it through registration and the choice-filling stress - congratulations! Now we're at the next very crucial step of being allotted a seat.
I've been through this myself, and let me tell you - the waiting is honestly the hardest part. You've done everything you can, and now it's out of your hands. But understanding what's actually happening during these two days can make the wait feel a little less stressful. So get comfortable, and let me walk you through what really goes on during seat allotment.

Eligibility Criteria
Now, what are the qualifications one would need to even partake in this whole process?
- Have qualified NEET PG Current year, conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE)
- Have completed or are completing their MBBS internship by July 31st, 2025.
- Possess a valid registration certificate from the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the respective State Medical Council
So if you meet the internal quota requirements for Central Universities if applying under such categories, then congratulations- you're eligible! Keep in mind, the eligibility for internal quotas is defined by the respective universities, not MCC.

Seat Allotment Process Explained
Here's what happens, phase after phase:
Starting With The Highest
The system begins with the highest-ranked student (lucky them!). It looks at their first choice - if there's a seat available in that college and course for their category, boom! They get it. The system then moves to the next student and repeats the process.
Chain Reaction
As seats get filled, they become unavailable for students with lower ranks. This is why your 15th choice might disappear even though you have a pretty good rank - someone with a better rank might have put it as their 14th choice and taken it.
Category is Important
The algorithm is always working within your category. So if you're in the OBC category, you're only competing for OBC seats with other OBC students. This is why that category certificate was so important during registration!
What Matters in Seat Allotment
Let me be really clear about what factors into your allotment:
What matters:
- Your NEET PG 2025 All India Rank (this is the big one)
- Your category (General/OBC/SC/ST/EWS/PwD)
- The order of choices you locked
- Seat availability in your category
What Happens After Seat Allotment
Once the allotment process completes on November 7th, here's what happens:
November 8th: Results are declared on the MCC portal. You'll need to log in with your credentials to see if you got a seat and where.
If you get a seat, you'll have three options:
- Accept and report - Take the seat and proceed to the college
- Accept and upgrade - Take the seat but try for something better in Round 2
- Resign - Decline the seat and exit the counselling process
Each choice has its own implications, so you'll want to think carefully before deciding.
Here's what I wish someone had told me while waiting for the next steps: Step away from the counselling forums. Seriously. Reading predictions and panic from other students will only make you more anxious. Instead, use this time to:
- Research the colleges on your list
- Look up hostel facilities
- Check out the cities you might be moving to
- Actually get some sleep!
Remember that this is just Round 1. Whether you get your dream seat or not, there are more rounds coming. Don't put all your emotional eggs in one basket.

Final Advice
However the results turn out, remember this: your worth as a future doctor isn't determined by which college you get. I know it's easy to get caught up in the prestige and ranking of institutions, but what really matters is the doctor you become, not the building you train in.
If you get your dream seat - amazing! Celebrate responsibly (maybe don't call every relative until you've actually read which seat you got - learned that one the hard way).
If you don't get what you wanted - it's okay to be disappointed. Feel those feelings, then remember there are more rounds coming. Many students actually get better seats in later rounds!

FAQs
Can I change my choices during the allotment process?
Nope! Once the locking window closed on November 5th, your choices were set in digital stone. That's why that locking step was so important.
What if two students have the same rank?
There are tie-breaker rules for this, usually based on age or other factors specified in the information bulletin. But it's pretty rare!
Will I get my first choice if my rank is good?
Not necessarily! Someone with a better rank might have also chosen your first choice. That's why filling multiple choices was so important.
What happens if I don't get any seat in Round 1?
Don't panic! There's Round 2 coming up, and often mop-up rounds after that. Many students get seats in later rounds
