    Round 1 Choice Filling Strategy

Understanding the conversion table is the first step; applying it to your strategy is the next. This announcement should directly influence how you build your preference list.

    For GENERAL (OPEN) Category Candidates:

This is exceptionally good news for you. The number of seats you can compete for will increase substantially in Round 3.

    • Strategy: In Round 1, you can afford to be ambitious. Fill choices for your dream government and management quota seats. However, also include enough number of safe choices from the current Open category seats. If you don't get a seat in Rounds 1 or 2, remember that in Round 3, you will have a larger pool of Open seats (including converted ones) to compete for, potentially improving your chances of a good allotment.

    For RESERVED Category (SC/ST/SEBC/EWS) Candidates:

The strategy for you is one of urgency and careful planning.

    • Strategy: Your best chance of securing a seat in your specific category is in Rounds 1 and 2. Once Round 3 begins, any vacant seats in your category will be transferred to the General pool. Therefore, it is crucial to fill as many choices as possible within your category in the first two rounds to maximize your allotment probability. Do not wait for Round 3, as your exclusive seat pool will shrink.

    Key Reservation Policies

The notification also reiterates two crucial reservation policies that define the initial seat matrix.

    Reservation TypeKey Policy Details
In-Service Candidates 10% of Government quota seats in specified PG subjects are reserved.
    • Subjects include: Pediatrics, TB & Chest, OBG, Community Medicine, Orthopedics, General Surgery, General Medicine, Anesthesiology, Radiology, and Pathology.
    • Applicable in Government Medical Colleges, DNB in Government District Hospitals, and GMERS Colleges.
Persons with Disabilities (PwD) 5% of available seats in each category at Government and Grant-in-Aid colleges are reserved.
    • The reservation follows the definitions and rights outlined in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

    Plan for Choice Filling

Use the following table as a checklist to build your choice list for Round 1.

    StepStrategic ActionReasoning
1Fill ALL PreferencesFrom your dream institute to a safe, acceptable college. The system will only allot the highest possible choice, so a long list only increases your chances.
2Prioritize by True Preference, Not Just CategoryRank your choices in the order you genuinely want to study in them. If you prefer a Management seat over a Government one, rank it higher.
3Consider the Future PoolGeneral candidates: Remember that your options will expand later. Reserved category candidates: Prioritize getting a seat in the first two rounds.
4Lock Your ChoicesThis is mandatory. Unlocked choices will not be considered for allotment. Save the confirmation slip as proof.

    FAQs

As a General category candidate, should I only fill Open category seats in Round 1?

No. You should fill all seats you are eligible for, including Management and NRI quotas, if you are willing to pay the fees. Rank them according to your genuine preference. The conversion process means you may get a converted government seat in Round 3, but you should still try for all eligible seats in the initial rounds.

If I am from the SEBC category and don't get a seat in Round 1, what happens to my chances in Round 3?

Your chances in your own category will reduce in Round 3 because any vacant SEBC seats will be converted to Open category. Therefore, you must fill a wide range of choices within your category in Rounds 1 and 2 to maximize your probability of allotment.

What happens to vacant NRI seats?

Vacant NRI seats are first converted to Management quota seats. If they remain vacant even after that, they will follow the cascade and eventually become Government quota seats in subsequent processes.

Is the 10% in-service reservation applicable to all medical and surgical branches?

No. The 10% in-service reservation is specifically for 10 named subjects, including Pediatrics, General Medicine, General Surgery, OBG, Orthopedics, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Pathology, Community Medicine, and TB & Chest. It does not apply to all specialties.
